Fencer challenges the player to maintain a metal ball on top of a wooden table by tilting and changing the orientation of the iPhone/iPod Touch.  The player must maneuver through slots or openings in the brick fences that move across the screen.  If the player cannot maneuver the ball successfully, the fence will push the ball off the table, ending the game.

Fencer - An iPhone/iPod Touch Application

The Launch Screen

The launch screen is the first view that the player will see after the Fencer icon is touched in the iPhone or iPod Touch’s home screen.  When the player taps the “Play” button to start the game, they can recover a previously saved game or start over from zero.

The player can also touch the “Settings” or “Players” tab to switch the game’s parameters or switch the active player.  The player switches back and forth to any screen by touching the appropriate button at the bottom of the screen.

When in the play screen, the game can also be started by tapping anywhere on the screen.

The Play Screen

The play screen is the view where the fences will move back and forth trying to push the ball off the table.

As the game starts, the ball is located at the center of the table and the fences move into view from the bottom of the screen.  The fences rotate, get closer together, and reverse their direction as they move across the screen.  The slots or openings are not always reachable; they may be located outside the edge of the table.  At those times, or when the speed of the ball will not allow the player to reach the opening in the fence, the player can jump over the fence.  To make the ball jump the player must “jerk” the iPhone/iPod Touch upwards.

The player accumulates points as long as they successfully navigate the ball through the fence openings.  Although jumping over a fence may be the only way to stay alive, it does not put points on the board.  The ball changes momentarily to a golden glow when it successfully negotiates an opening in a fence.

After negotiating a certain number of fence openings, the player is congratulated for clearing the level.  The level counter is increased and the fences begin their trek across the screen again, only this time they move faster.

Tapping the screen or any button on the tab bar pauses the game.   At that point you can save or restore the game.

The Settings Screen

The settings screen provides the player with several alternatives to control the behavior of the game.  The main control parameters are the count of fences to rotate, to move the fences closer to each other, and to reverse their direction.  Whenever the player taps on any of these parameters to change them, a warning pops up.  If the settings are changed, the score and level are reset back to zero.  If the player does not like the new settings, the “Reset Settings” button allows the settings to be changed back to the pre-set numbers.

At the bottom of the settings screen there are two buttons that control the game’s sound.  Turning off the game’s sounds allows the player to listen to their favorite music from the iPod application while playing Fencer.  There are separate buttons to turn on and off the sound effects and the background music.
